  • Kahnawake: Historique Foncier NOTE: Kahnawake was NOT created under the seigneurial system. Kahnawake existed in the area long before Canada and Quebec were established. Kahnawake is one of the oldest communities along the St Lawrence river. It was established by Iroquois moving back to the area due to wars, plagues and alcoholism which was rampant to the south at that time. When the French established the seigneurie system, the area where the Iroquois were was recognized by the king of France as the area he could provide protection against incursions by his people, including the sale of alcohol to the Iroquois, whose very first law was to ban alcohol in the community. Subsequent incursions into the territory resulted in the protected area being reduced to approximately 1/3 its original size. Archived 2011-07-06 at the Wayback Machine,
