Equal to the franc, the new Napoleonic lira had a different value face to the old, ancient Milanese lira. Distinguishing the two different coins, people began to refer to the new coin as franc. So, over the years, people in north-western Italy continued to call franc the lira in their local dialects until the changeover to the euro in 2002. [1]
