  • Presumed motto, not official. A legend has it that the motto of the kingdom was Noxias herbas ('noxious herbs'), chosen by Charles I of Anjou in reference to the rake [it] present on the coat of arms, which would have symbolized the expulsion of the Swabian "weed". This hypothesis is rejected by Giovanni Antonio Summonte, who explains that the rake (which is actually a label) indicated that the Angevins were a cadet branch of the Capetians, from whom they inherited the coat of arms with the golden fleurs-de-lis.[1]
