However, the major story of the election was the victory of the colourful Gerry Fitt in West Belfast. Fitt, under the label of Republican Labour, successfully defeated the Unionist Party incumbent, James Kilfedder.
Fitt would continue to represent West Belfast until 1983, for the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), the party he helped found in 1970 and led until 1980, and then as an Independent Socialist.
