There has been confusion regarding Montessori's association with The Theosophical Society and during her stay in India she openly proclaimed that she was not a member. This was in fact accurate, but it was discovered posthumously that Montessori had in fact been a member of the society at one point. She joined the European Section of the Society on 23 May 1899, however sometime thereafter, "her membership was later dropped, although the date is not known." Wilson, C. (1985).
