[S]ome scholars argue that article 357 was the source of the current "rape-marriage" laws in Middle Eastern countries after French colonization. However, other scholars are uncertain about the origins of rape-marriage laws in the Middle East. Indeed, the language of the latest Ottoman Penal Code included the word "rape" in the definition of bride abduction, whereas the Napoleonic Code [sic] did not.
