There are two relatively large integrated media investment groups that carry out commercial broadcasting, i.e. Media Prima Berhad (MPB) and ASTRO All Asia Networks Plc (ASTRO). Both media groups compete for a relatively small but growing domestic market and both have ventured into the international market for broadcasting and entertainment.
MPB was incorporated in Malaysia as a private limited company under the Companies Act, 1965 on 27 November 2000 as Profitune Sdn Bhd. It was converted into a public limited company and adopted the name of Profitune Berhad on 7 November 2001. It subsequently changed its name to Media Prima Berhad on 10 June 2002.
The SC also approved the application for exemption from the obligation to undertake a mandatory offer on the remaining voting shares in The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd by Media Prima Bhd (formerly known as Profitune Bhd).
