A small community of Muslim Assyrians, the Mhallami, lives in southern Turkey. All speak variations of Eastern Neo-Aramaic, a Semitic language related to Arabic and Hebrew, traditionally written with distinct scripts.

We have seen a type of 'Assyrianism' from both lay and religious elites within the Syrian Orthodox community, which is shared by members of the Chaldean Church, Church of the East, and indeed among some Yezidis, Mhalmoye, and other individuals from Iraq, Syria, and Turkey.
