One of the events that marked the most significant turning point of German racial thought was undoubtedly the publication of Hans F.K. Günther's Rassenkunde des deutschen Volkes in 1922. Immediately after its appearance, this work gained unprecedented circulation, and by 1942 its sales reached 124,000 copies. Günther's book is of particular importance, mainly due to its great popularity among the general public in the twenties and thirties, and the author's prestige in the eyes of the National Socialist ideological elite. [...] A shortened, popularized, version of the book, published in 1929 under the name Kleine Rassenkunde des deutschen Volkes, was compulsory reading in all schools in the Third Reich.
