Hetherington chose to use the name "Meryla" because that was (a) the name of the street in which he grew up, (b) had learned how to manipulate a marionette, and (c) had constructed his first puppets. It is also significant that, in the first few decades, his single operator puppet shows were always introduced as "The Meryla Marionettes present...", rather than as "Norman Hetherington presents...". Eventually, however, they became known as The Norman Hetherington Puppets (e.g., [3]; [4]).
