  • Davies, Peter E.; et al. (Illustrated by Adam Tooby, Henry Morshead) (2012). Republic F-105 Thunderchief. Bloomsbury Publishing. ISBN 9781780961743. One of the F-105's most distinctive features, its swept-forward air intakes, was also added at this stage. Derived by Antonio Ferri from work on the XF-103 interceptor, the intakes performed far better than the original type at high speeds. They included moveable 'plugs' to change the cross-section of the intake and match the airflow to the engine's requirements at varying flight speeds. The plugs and associated internal bleed-air doors were controlled by the aircraft's Bendix central air data computer (CADC).
