Bulletins and other state intelligence, Part 2, p. 1488, quoting London Gazette of October 24, 1854: "The Queen has been pleased to give and grant unto Robert Alfred Cloyne Austen, of Chilworth, in the county of Surrey, Esquire, and unto Maria Elizabeth his wife, only daughter and heir of Henry Thomas Godwin, Esquire, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, late a Major-General in Her Majesty's Army, deceased, Her royal licence and authority that they and their issue may henceforward assume and use the surname of Godwin in addition to, and before that of, Austen."
