  • Some references indicate the ship was U.S. Navy or acquired by the Navy. Those appear to be in error, a common one where many Army ships were assumed to be Navy, as a search of Naval Historical and Heritage Command (including DANFS) makes no mention of such use and Army records the ship's Army use from the few days before the brief (and probably necessary formality) Red Cross charter in late December 1941 until release back in the Philippines 1 September 1945. Occasional references to the hospital ship "USS Mactan" are completely in error as no such ship was ever commissioned during the war or post war years.
