Up to 1924 there was no rule prohibiting a player taking a corner kick and simply kicking it to himself. However, in that year Everton's Sam Chedgzoy dribbled the ball all the way from the corner arc to the goal and scored against Arsenal, prompting the rules to be hastily changed so that the corner taker must pass it to another player. And that's the way it's been ever since.
