  • "Ogiya Hanaogi 扇屋花扇". The British Museum. Retrieved 19 December 2024. Bijin and courtesan. Hanaogi was of 'yobidashi' rank in the brothel of Ogiya Uemon (扇屋宇右衛門) in Edo-cho 1-chome. She was the most renowned courtesan of the Kansei era. Impressions are known with 'bijin' in the title but these all have just the name 'Hana … of the Ogiya', without the second 'ogi' character of the courtesan's name and without the names of her 'kamuro', which have been carved out of the block. As Suzuki Juzo has pointed out, this probably has something to do with the incident of 1794 in which Hanaogi ran away from the Quarter, only to be brought back a short while later. After this incident, it can be surmised that the block was altered in this way so as to avoid infringement of the law forbidding the treatment of contemporary events.
