The khaki-coloured cloth was introduced by the decision of 31 August 1915 which reserved one fifth of the monthly supplies of khaki cloth "for the workshops of the depots of the colonial troops in the metropolis (clothing for the [Tirailleurs] Sénégalais)". Worn by those.. that came as reinforcements during the year 1916, khaki-clad troops appeared during the Battle of the Somme, while the marsouins still wore horizon blue.
