While people may be said to "live" in the grave, this "life" is only in the dust and gloom of the netherworld. Israelite attitudes toward death and the afterlife parallel those of their neighbors, and as one would expect, the funerary practices of the Israelites differed little from their Canaanite precursors and neighbors. At death a person entered into the netherworld, that dark, gloomy mirror of the earthly world typically termed "Sheol".
