Until 1968, the unlamented Lord Chamberlain had the right to ban plays the subject or language was deemed unsuitable. Since it was forbidden to portray homosexuality (or even the suggestion of it), a group of West End managers got together to form The New Watergate Club at the Comedy where they could present banned plays under club conditions.
