"Washington township was formed from Northampton, Evesham and Little Egg Harbor. Pleasant Mills and Green Bank are post towns. Crowleytown, Washington, and Quaker Bridge are also in this township. It contains an extensive cranberry swamp. There are also large quantities of bog iron ore. The population in 1850 was 2,009; in 1860, 1,008; and in 1870, 1,149." The population for 1850 is one less than the value listed, with much larger discrepancies for 1860 and 1870.
