Eli Lilly Jr. was the grandson of Fortune's mentor, Colonel Eli Lilly, the founder of Eli Lilly and Company, and the son of Fortune's close friend, Josiah K. Lilly Sr., the company president and board chairman. The friendship between Fortune and the Lilly family became strained to the breaking point when Eli Jr. and Evelyn Lilly divorced in 1927.
