  • "AMN État civil". Nantes Municipal Archive (in French). Nantes. 3 July 1809. Retrieved 28 November 2022. This act is structured in a rather complex way: L'an 1809 le 3 Juillet, ..., we, deputy delegate... have literally transcribed the minutes, the content of which follows: "This day, June 28, 1809, ..., I, Sébastien Barthélémey Benoist , commissioner of police of the city of Nantes...reports that by virtue of the delegation...to note the abandonment of the children...exposed in the extent of my division...has appeared before me the sieur Jean Favret, commissionaire at the orphanage of the orphans of this town.. who told me that yesterday at 10 o'clock in the evening, he found exposed at the exterior door of the said orphanage the child he was presenting to me. Examination made of the said child….. (follows the description of the clothes and the text of the inscription) Consequently, I gave her the names of Élisa Mercœur. Having immediately gone with the said Jean Favret carrying the said Élisa Mercœur to the orphans' orphanage of this city, I requested the superior to receive her…. The present closed and arrested at the orphans' orphanage…. Signed: Bouchet, Benoist" (follows the deputy's signature).
