Tiu letero ne estis publikigita dum la vivodaŭro de Hegelo, sed la esprimo estis atribuita al Hegelo anekdote, aperante presita ekde 1859 (L. Noack, Schelling und die Philosophie der Romantik, 1859, p. 153). Ĝi estis uzita sen atribuo fare de Meyer Kayserling en sia Sephardim (1859:103), kaj estas ŝajne ne agnoskita al Hegelo fare de la revizianto en Göttingische gelehrte Anzeigen 2 (1861) p. 770, kiu notas ĝin malaprobe, kiel unu el la "malbonaj ŝercoj" de Kayserling (schlechte Witze).
