Los primeros barcos egipcios conocidos datan del 3000 AC y fueron encontrados en Abidos en 1991. Se trataba de tablones unidos por cuerdas. Barcos similares que datan del 2600 aC se encontraron en 1954 y 1987 en la Pirámide de Keops en Giza. El 1894, otros barcos egipcios compuestos por tableros unidos fueron encontrados en Dashur.
