Siglos VI-XIII. p. 349. «Durante el periodo anterior (siglos X-XI), el occidente zamorano se había integrado en el reino de León. La escasez de noticias en el siglo XI alimenta la hipótesis de que nos hallamos ante un espacio marginal dentro de la formación leonesa, al igual que ocurre con otras de la periferia interior. La génesis de la monarquía portuguesa hizo necesaria una delimitación fronteriza que dividiría regiones con similitudes socio-económicas, políticas y culturales, conformándose como zonas de frontera. […] Los conflictos culminan a principios del XIII, cuando Nuño de Zamora, posiblemente Nuño Froilaz, repuebla Castro de Alcañices y los leoneses controlan Aliste, tras haber conquistado temporalmente algunos castillos de la zona trasmontana oriental. La línea fronteriza quedará así fijada hasta nuestros días, con la salvedad del territorio de Hermisende, objeto de disputas entre ambas monarquías».

A ello hay que añadir el hecho de que en 1594 esta zona aparecía formando parte de la Tierra de Sanabria, adscrita al Reino de León».
