Constatado este efecto en humanos, los investigadores trataron de replicar las observaciones realizadas en el laboratorio a través de cultivos puros de bacterias, a las que se añadió metformina. “Vimos cómo añadiendo este principio en la placa de Petri a Bifidobacterium adolescentis aumentaba sustancialmente su crecimiento y abundancia”. A partir de este conocimiento los investigadores plantearon cómo utilizarlo para modificar el ecosistema bacteriano y disminuir la concentración de glucosa en sangre.»
