L'usage scientifique en chimie et biochimie privilégie largement le préfixe eicosa- qui est pourtant étymologiquement incorrect. L'IUPAC préconise le préfixe icosa- (voir (en) « Basic numerical terms (multiplying affixes) » dans le cadre de la nomenclature IUPAC), du grec ancienεἴκοσι / eíkosi, « vingt », comme dans icosaèdre, mais cette dénomination reste minoritaire.
