Cette anecdote (1re version) est relatée, entre autres, dans Jean Valnet, L'aromathérapie, Paris, éd. Le Livre de Poche no 7885, , 640 p. (ISBN978-2-253-03564-0, BNF34771362). À l'époque, la notion de « chémotype » (voir plus loin) d'une huile essentielle n'était pas encore connue. En conséquence de quoi, même si les méthodes et l'exactitude des recherches de Jean Valnet et de René Maurice Gattefossé étaient hors de tout soupçon et ont permis l'avènement de l'aromathérapie, aujourd'hui, leurs découvertes réclament d'être plus détaillées. Ainsi, il est possible de distinguer plusieurs sortes de plantes du même type donnant plusieurs sortes d'huiles essentielles. Dans cet exemple, lorsque l'on parle « d'huile essentielle de lavande » il est, de nos jours, possible et utile de préciser qu'il s'agit d'« huile essentielle de lavande vraie » (Lavanda augustfolia aussi appelée « officinale », « anglaise » ou « commune ») ou d'« huile essentielle de lavandin » dit « super » ceci afin de les différencier de l'« huile essentielle de lavande aspic » ou encore de l'« huile essentielle de lavande stœchade » qui sont nettement moins ou guère appropriées aux soins des brûlures — voir Monika Werner et Ruth von Braunschweig, L'aromathérapie.
