« "the year Arytamas of Sparta won at the stadion". The Olympic victor list of Julius Africanus (fr. 65.100 Wallraf), names an Athenian, Phrynon, victor in the stadion, but then notes that he was killed in single combat with Pittakos. Diogenes Laertios 1.74 says that the victorious Phrynon was killed by Pittakos in single combat during a war between Athens and Mitylene. Rutgers therefore emended Julius Africanus' list so that Phrynon was the victor rather in the pankration and added Arytamas of Sparta as the stadion victor on the basis of Hippys F 3,but E. Manni, 'Ippi di Reggio, un "logografo" da ricostruire', Mélanges P. Lévêque (Paris 1989), 331 points out that an interpolator would probably have made reference to a better-known athlete. L. Moretti, Olympionikai (Rome 1957),no. 58 thought that Hippys consulted a list that was earlier than and different from that of Hippias »
