D'un diamètre initial de 700 km, ce panache se serait développé au contact de la lithosphère continentale pour atteindre près de 1 500 km de diamètre entre 30 Ma et 20 Ma, et déplacé avec la plaque arabo-africaine depuis au moins 20 Ma. Il est actuellement centré sous le lac Abbe. Il induit le réchauffement de la lithosphère, produisant un halo thermique d'environ 500 km.
