Plus précisément, il s'agit du virus FMDV, sérogroupe O1, souche BFS 1860/UK/67, dont on dispose à ce jour de la séquence complète des génomes de deux isolats: iso18 et iso46 (numéros d'accès GenBankAY593815 et AY593816, respectivement). Leurs génomes sont constitués d'une chaîne d'ARN simple brin de 8194 nucléotides de long et qui diffèrent entre eux par 6 substitutions.
