« Well, I always composed. As a child, I tried to write little pieces and, as a teenager, began to orchestrate some of them. And my father was a musician, and there were theory books sitting around the house that were there underfoot since age eight or ten or whatever. But piano was my serious study. I hadn't intended ever to become a professional composer. Fact wouldn't imagine anyone could earn a living doing that. » in (en) « A conversation with John WIlliams », National Endowment for the Arts, 3 mars 2011.
