Liverani donne une bonne illustration des principes qui guident sa recherche dans sa critique du Black Athena de Martin Bernal, cf (en) « The Bathwater and the Baby », dans Black Athena revisited, Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina Press, 1996 (ISBN 0807822469, lire en ligne), p. 421-427. Bernal dénonçait l'Euro-centrisme de l'histoire de l'Antiquité, et donc une mentalité impérialiste qui faisait dévier la recherche, mais il exagérait en parlant d'une conspiration, alors qu'il s'agit d'un conditionnement, selon Liverani (p. 424). De ce fait, sa critique de l'historiographie « jette le bébé avec l'eau du bain », et son manque d'analyse de la méthode le fait lui-même rentrer dans des défauts de méthode similaires à ce qu'il critique. Il rejette l'analyse philologique, qui est fondamentale selon Liverani, mais de ce fait revient à une lecture naïve de certaines sources. Enfin, il néglige trop la dimension archéologique de la recherche historique (p. 425).
