C'est le généticien britannique J.B.S. Haldane qui semble s'être, le premier, servi de cette métaphore pour indiquer la place excessive occupée par l'adaptation des organismes dans la théorie synthétique de l'évolution. Ce néologisme est repris en 1979 par Stephen Jay Gould et Richard Lewontin dans leur article « Les pendentifs de Saint-Marc et le paradigme panglossien : une critique du programme adaptationniste ».
