D'après le copiste, le papyrus d'origine dont le papyrus Rhind est la copie remonte à l'époque du pharaon AmenemhatIII. Thomas Heath la fait remonter vers 2200 av. J.-C. Cependant la critique fait remonter cet original entre 1849 à 1801 av. J.-C.
