Certaines sources, dont le bureau commercial de l'ambassade de Chypre à Paris, affirment que la production de zivanía remonte « à l’époque de l’occupation de l’île par la Sérénissime République de Venise, en fin du XIVe siècle » ; or la prise de contrôle de l'île de Chypre par la République de Venise s'est effectuée en 1489, à la fin du XVe siècle ; voir à ce sujet l'article Histoire de Chypre.
