On 29 November 1947 the UN General Assembly voted to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, leaving Jerusalem under UN supervision as a “corpus separatum”. (…) The proposed Jewish state was to consist of 55 percent of the country, including the largely unpopulated Negev desert.Its population would comprise some 500.000 Jews and 400.000 Arabs –a very substantial minority. Jews, at that point, owned just 7 percent of Palestine’s private land. The Arabe state was to have 44 percent of the land and a minority of 10.000 Jews. Greater Jerusalem was to remain under international rule.
