there is historic evidence to show that the Abhiras, who were Kshatriyas, had established powerful kingdoms in different parts of India. The Ahirs and the Gopas are synonyms of the Abbiras.
Among the tribes of indigenous origin also referred to as vratya kṣatriyas in some sources are listed the Drāviḍa, Abhira, Śabara, Kirāta, Mālava, Śibi, Trigarta and Yaudheya.

the Bhāgavata religion was considered primarily as the religion of the Ābhīras and Krşņa himself came to be known as an Ābhira. In the mediaeval literature, Krsna is called an Ābbira.
Abhira Kshatriyas were named Gope when they protected the cows, and Gopal when they tended and grazed the cows. 23 In the period (from 500 B.C. to 1 B.C.) when the Pali language was prevalent in India, the word 'Gopal was modified to 'Goal' and by further modification it took the form of Gwal. This has been aptly described by an unknown poet 24 in a verse that" due to rearing cattle, the Yadav are called ' Gope', and after being called' Gopal', they are called' Gwal' (Singh, 1945).
The kṣatriyas who were afraid of Parasurama and had hidden themselves in the Caucasian hilly regions later on became known as the Abhiras, and the place they inhabited was known as Abhiradeśa.
Sauraseni is linked to Surabhir, the founder of the pastoral Ahir clan of the Gangetic plains.
The Suras and Abhiras' are associated together in the Mahābhārata and Harivansa and appear to have been a pastoral people in the upper portion of the north-western Panjāb represented by the Ahirs and Gwalas of the present day.
The story goes that Krishna was a prince of royal blood, the son of Vasudeva. He lived with Nanda, who was also a king and Kshatriya by caste. Vasudeva and Nanda were brothers When Vasudeva knew that Nanda has come to Mathura to pay the taxes of King Kansa, he went to his brother Nanda. The point that the Abhira are Kshatriyas and specifically Yaduvansi. In Harivamsa Purana, it has been said that Gopas and Yadav are generic of same lineage and they are called Gope or Yadav.
The Padma Purāṇa relates that Vishnu informed the Abhiras: "I shall be born amongst you, O Abhiras, at Mathura in my eighth birth", which makes it evident that the Ābhīras were the same as the Gopas or Ballavas of Mathura. The same Purāṇa mentions that the Abhiras were also the great philosophers.
The Yādavas, mentioned in the Mahabharata, were pastoral kshatriyas among whom Krishna was brought up. The Gopas, whom Krishna had offered to Duryodhana to fight in his support when he himself joined Arjuna's side, were no other than the Yadavas themselves, who were also the Abhiras. In the Epics and the Puranas the association of the Yādavas with the Abhiras was attested by the evidence that the Yådava kingdom was" mostly inhabited by the Abhiras. In the Harivamsa, the Yadava kingdom called Anaratta is described as mostly inhabited by the Abhiras(Abhira-praya-manusyam). In the Mahabharata it is mentioned that when the Yadavas (though belonging to the Abhira group) abandoned Dwaraka and Gujarat after the death of Krishna and retreated northwards under Arjuna's leadership, they were attacked and broken up.
surrounding territories round about Mathura mainly consist of Abhiras(Abhira-praya). Later it is said that all the races of Anhdakas, Vrisnis, etc. belonged to this race of Yadu. If this be so, it is evident that Krshna belonged to a race which included the race of Abhiras
