The Iranian Islamic revolution of 1979 and the subsequent outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in 1980 pushed up world oil prices dramatically from $14.95 per barrel in 1978 to $37.42 per barrel in 1980. Owing to the sharp rise in oil prices, the world economy suffered output stagnation, higher inflation, and higher interest rates (Hutchison, 1991). Alekhina and Yoshino (2018) pointed out that a decline in oil supply also contributed to the price spike.
