Kisebb polgári névjegyzéket és kisebb életjáradékot fogadott el hitvesének, mint amit bármelyik elődjének fizettek. Felfedte Lancaster és Cornwall hercegségének beszámolóit, amelyek korábban magántulajdonnak számítottak. Jövedelmét is csökkentette azzal, hogy azt az újonnan bevezetett jövedelemadó alá vetette. Ezen engedmények ellenére sikerült jelentős magánvagyonra szert tennie. Ennek a vagyonnak a fő forrása a két hercegségből származó jövedelmek javulása és a polgári névjegyzék jobb kezelése volt. Mindkét forrás hasznot húzott a herceg hitvese által kikényszerített reformokból. A királynő magánvagyonát használta fel a korábban közpénzből fizetett tárgyak kifizetésére. Házakat épített és emlékműveket állított. Részben fizette az aranyjubileumot, teljes egészében a polgári névjegyzék 1880-tól kezdődő meghibásodása miatt felhalmozódott adósságokat. A parlament pedig a magánvagyonának bizonyítékait használta fel, hogy csökkentse az utódok számára nyújtott állami támogatások méretét és számát. Így a fokozott parlamenti felügyelet és a polgári lista jobb szabályozása javította a királynő magánvagyoni helyzetét, de csökkentette a közterheket is.”
