  • Laing maintainded that true sanity can conly be achieved through the dissolution of the socially adjusted ego (or persona) in a process which he termed "metanoia."...Like Jung before him, Laing borroewd the word "metanoia" from the New Testament to describe the dissolution of normal egoic consciousness. When translated from the original Greek, this word is usually rendered as "repentance." The problem with this commonplace translation is that it dwells primarily on the subject's sense of sinfulness, and his (or her) earnest desire to shed sinful habits and desires. But in the original Greek, the term "metanoia" connotes an epistemological upheaval, a radical change of perspective, a total and irreversible change in one's view of oneself and the world - in short, an epiphany or enlightenment experience more akin to the ancient idea of "gnosis" than to moral reform or reconstruction. • Falling ill is the first step in a "self-cure," a process Laing later called "metanoia," "a term used in the Greek New Testament for atonement." Metanoia, especially in its schizophrenic form, is an existential journey, Laing argued; with safe surroundings, it can actually be a route toward recovery based on choice.Daniel Burston.
