Il nome ʿAbd al-Rasūl è del tutto errato, in quanto alla lettera significherebbe "Schiavo dell'Inviato [di Dio]", cioè Maometto. Cosa del tutto blasfema, in quanto il termine ʿAbd ("schiavo") può essere usato solo seguito dal nome di Dio (Allāh) o da un suo sinonimo. Del tutto ortodosso invece il nome ʿAbd rabbi (Schiavo del Signore) "dell'Inviato di Allāh".
Altri modi di scrivere il suo nome sono: Abdul Rasul Sayyaf, Abd-i-Rab Rasoul Sayaf, Abdul Rabb Rasoul Sayyaf
