Ughelli e Garruba ammettono la presenza di Leone al concilio di Nicea II del 787. A quel concilio presero parte vescovi dell'Italia meridionale che appartenevano a dominii bizantini; Bari tuttavia alla fine dell'VIII secolo faceva parte di un gastaldatolongobardo (Francesco Tateo, Storia di Bari dalla preistoria al mille, Bari 1989). Un vescovo Leone fu presente a Nicea, ma era vescovo di Baris in Pisidia e non di Bari nelle Puglie.
