Peter Heather non crede al tradimento di Bonifacio tramandato da Procopio perché «le altre fonti contemporanee dell'Impero d'Occidente non accennano minimamente a questo tradimento» e «nel 429 Bonifacio aveva fatto pace con la corte imperiale e non aveva alcuna ragione di invitare i barbari nelle sue province» ( La caduta dell'Impero romano: una nuova storia, Milano, Garzanti, 2006, pp. 328–329, ISBN88-1169-402-7.).
