«In the mid-1880s, George Westinghouse introduced a rival power distribution system based on alternating current. Because alternating current systems can make use of transformers to step voltage levels up and down at will, the Westinghouse ac system was able to transmit power at much higher voltages than the transformer-less dc system, and step the voltages back down to safer levels for homes and offices.
