Michael Barrier, Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in Its Golden Age, New York., Oxford University Press, 1999, pp. 318,602, ISBN0-19-516729-5. Barrier notes on page 272 that Pinocchio returned rentals of less than one million by September 1940, and in its first public annual report, Walt Disney Productions charged off a $1 million loss to the film. In a note on page 602, Barrier relays that a 1947 Pinocchio balance sheet lists total receipts to the studio of $1,423,046.78, while noting on page 318 in text that "Dumbo only grossed $1.3 million, $600,000 less than Pinocchio"
