  • テイラーは8月4日に戦争省に赴き、戦線で気象予報をする部隊の編成への協力を申し出た。その時テイラーに面会した将校は「兵士は傘をさして戦場に行かない。降っても止んでも戦いに行く。」(原文:"Soldiers don't go into battle under umbrellas, they go whether it is raining or not,")としてその申し出を断ったのだが、テイラーの連絡先を控えていた。その後、当時英国の航空部隊の長だったセフトン・ブランカー英語版少佐は科学者による協力の申し出があった事を知り、ロイヤル・エアクラフト・ファクトリでテイラーを科学者として雇用する旨のメッセージを送った。テイラーがそれを受け取ったのは5日夕刻だったという[23]
