NASAの公式情報によれば旗にワイヤーは入れられていないが、空気のない環境で風に翻っているように見せるために設計段階から水平の部材で旗面を支持することが検討されており、最終段階においてもこれが踏襲された。波打っているような効果は展開時の不具合によって水平材が完全に伸長しなかったために生じたものとされる。Cf.
