直訳すると「生体遮蔽」。現行の発電用原子炉において、主に原子炉圧力容器や原子炉格納容器の外周を囲む分厚い重コンクリートの壁を指す（生体遮へい - 原子力百科事典ATOMICA）。核反応で生じる強力な放射線を遮る重要な役目を果たすものだが、この原子炉は核爆弾の原料製造用であり圧力容器も格納容器も存在しない。ただこの構造物自体が黒鉛炉の炉心を冷やす空気の通風に関わる「筒」を兼ねていることから本記事では炉心シュラウドと訳した。
