1572年没のジョン・アースキンは1565年にマー伯爵の爵位を回復したが、1875年の貴族院裁決と1885年の議会立法の結果、爵位復活と爵位創設の両方が行われたものとみなされ^[1]、本記事の人物は中世創設の爵位のみ継承しているため「第27代マー伯爵」となる。また、『クラクロフト貴族名鑑』など1435年没の第12代マー伯爵アレクサンダー・ステュアート（英語版）を正式な伯爵として数えない文献もあり^[2]、その場合は本記事の人物が中世創設の爵位における「第26代マー伯爵」となる。
