Online Etymology Dictionary。もともと Lesbian は地名の形容詞で、Japanese, Russian などと同様「～人」の意味もあり、初期の Lesbianism/lesbianism は「レスボス人のごとき風潮」といった意味の造語であった。この言葉が「レズビアニズム」として定着すると、Lesbian/lesbian もその関連で使われることが多くなり、現在に至っている。なお、ギリシャではこの言葉をめぐって訴訟も起きている。これについてはレスボス島を参照。
